Buying links is a controversial topic among webmasters and web designers. So do you buy links to increase the position of your website on Google or not? Or another way of putting might be, do paid links help your rankings? If so, what are the risks? Is it possible to increase a websites rankings by “buying” links? OK, to answer the pressing question first; yes you can buy links that point to your website and yes, backlinks are perhaps the most important factor that influences the position of your website in Google’s search results. And yes, if you buy backlinks they can get high rankings for your website on Google in no time at all….

There’s another question though that you should hear the answer to and you may not like it! You probably realized that I’m building up to a “But” and if you’ll excuse the obvious and ugly pun… it’s a “big BUT!”… (spelled with one “t” people! Tsk, tsk, clean your minds!) So if buying links sends your website to high ranking heaven, why shouldn’t you use it for your website? Simply put, buying links is against Google’s terms of service, and let’s not kid ourselves, Google owns the lion share of online searches so lets get this right. An besides, if what I’ve been reading recently is right about Bing.com and their SEO parameters, they don’t even take links into account; so back to Google. Here’s what Google’s anti-spam engineer Matt Cutts recently said, “Buying or selling links that pass Page Rank is in violation of Google’s webmaster guidelines and can negatively impact a site’s ranking in search results.” He went on to say that Google has been working on new algorithms and tools that WILL detect paid links!

Also, Google has a report form for paid links and if one of your competitors finds a paid link that points to your website he or she might be inclined to report it to Google, (Let’s be honest, it would be in their own interest even if it’s a selfish and mean thing to do!) We need to bite the ugly truth here people; Google is actively searching for paid links and it’s highly likely that pretty soon they’ll be able to detect all paid links! Some of the detractors of this argument will say that their sites are shooting up the page ranks so why should they be bothered or concerned and yes, it’s possible that you can get away with it for some time; but don’t kid yourself; your website WILL be penalized as soon as Google finds out that you tried to force the system. So buying links may leads to quick results but they’ll leave you with bigger penalties and a headache that could kill an elephant!

Using ethical SEO methods take longer to achieve high search engine rankings, BUT, (and this is a nice but!), your rankings will grow steadily AND in the long run you’ll get a much higher and sustainable page ranking in the search engines. Let me spell it out people… “Ethical SEO methods, used with integrity, pay off in the long run!” If you want all your hard work to backfire on you go ahead and use spammy SEO methods to increase your rankings on Google. It will KILL your page rankings and take forever to recover from but hey, you got that quick buck right? (Yep, that’s sarcasm!) However, if you want an online business that’s sustainable and progressively increasing in income or social traffic, (whatever is important to you), then there are better ways to get inbound links and to “SEO” your site!

As I wrote earlier, the links to your website are one of the most important factors that influences the position of your website in Google’s search results. For that reason, it’s very important to get as many good backlinks as possible to your website. The quality of the backlinks are more important than the quantity. You can get links from related websites, links from blogs, links from social bookmark websites, links from Internet directories, relevant forums and of course from article submission websites such EzineArticles.com Yes it requires a little effort but that’s part of building a business and dear reader we need to realize that taking unethical shortcuts, such as buying backlinks, is a sure fired shortcut to internet oblivion!

Have you ever heard about AdSense Exchange Services? If you have then you may have been tempted to try them to boost your Adsense sales. DON’T DO IT!! How do they work? Well the readers digest version is “You click on my AdSense ads, and I click yours!” (Obviously with the intent of earning more revenue!)

I’m not even going to mention any company names here, that’s how much contempt I hold them in! And why? Because it’s illegal! How strongly can I word this. If you want your Adsense account to be shut down FOREVER, then go right ahead and try these exchange services …

Using Google Adsense honestly

Google is not daft! You surely don’t think that a company with their resources hasn’t found a way to track these types of services? Have a go, get some clicks, smile as you see the earnings leap then weep when a few days later an e-mail comes from the AdSense team to say that your AdSense account has been closed for fraudulent clicks.

And don’t think that it’s limited to Google either! Other networks, such as PPC RevenuePilot, are on the ball too! They may not close the account, instead they’ll slash your earning per click to mere cents if anything even if it just looks suspicious!

So to wrap up … there are no short cuts, (only ones that have a legal team knocking on your door!) So apply yourself. Make small adjustments in your Adsense ads, test & retest. See what others in the field are doing and emulate them … in other words … do it right, get it right and earn! Don’t be naive; think long term, NOT short term!

Its very important for a rapid adoption of AdSense that its very easy for publishers to get Ads on your site as soon as possible. The integration of AdSense on your site takes just a few minutes, and you can be on your way with one or more well integrated AdSense ads.

The first thing we need to do is to navigate Google Adsense.  Log in to apply for an account and password, (assuming you dont have one). There follows a description of the page Google AdSense Terms you must agree to continue.

Next page is a one that shows you about the details of how your AdSense account and the best way to go about generating your advertising. At the top of the page also links to the configuration where you can enter the code that must be inserted on your site that generate the AdSense banners.

You can use AdSense for text (ads) and a with a search box or instructions. Finally, a “My Account” tab that allows you to set details for that account, payments and Tax Information. To add a text ad on your site, return to the ‘AdSense Setup’ in the tab-click “AdSense for Content” link. Make sure you have cookies enabled.

You can make a choice between ads and link blocks. The former contains, or text and images in connection with a determined for each location, the master with a detailed description, the latter only links to specific types.

Of course, it’s a bit difficult to know which type you should use, so you should experiment with both for a time to decide. The next step is the choice of form and color adding. Basically you can use any color you want and Google offers some of its. This is an important stage. Dont discount it thinking colour isnt important!

As a graphic designer I see the importance of colur everyday in marketing and I cant emphahsis it enough! Whats important at a basic level is that you match the coloures as much as possible to two or three of the most dominant colurs on your website site or even if you want to get really particular, on each page if theyre so diverse. (The way to do this is to create a new ad for each page and colur accordingly with each ad generated)

Its incredibly popular and the choice of advertisers and publishers alike! Now Go get your slice of the pie!

Well I’ve got this site monetized at last! I’ve got two types on the site ..

1: The search feature is a customized Google search box that pays revenue if someone clicks on one of the results.

2: The main Goggle Ads themselves. They come in various “flavours” and are highly customisable! Currently I’ve got them on the top and bottom of the posts and pages, (as you’ll see!) I’m going to write a lot more about my experience of putting it together and up onto my site and I might even do a screen capture and let you see the process for yourselves .. Stay tuned  .. oh! And feel free to click on those ad’s!

Hello again lovely reader … I’ve got a stack of things that I want to write about for you but as I’m pressed for time right now I’ll just
throw out the most urgent one, (urgent for you that is!) You use Facebook right? You may want to in the future if you don’t and either
way check this out QUICKLY! Grab your name on FACEBOOK while you can! Why wouldnt you rather own www.facebook.com/yourname?

Here’s what you need to do: Login to Facebook,  and then go to www.facebook.com/username There you’ll see a page that will give you suggestions for your username and the ability to choose your own. Either choose one of the names suggested or type in your own, (assuming it hasn’t gone already!!)

If someone else has already has used your name, try adding a period, a dash, or try shortening it, making it longer, or adding numbers. Repeat this process for any Facebook Fan Pages you administer, though there are three catches: first, your page must have over 1000 fans prior to May 31st 2009, you cant claim something generic like travel or insurance, and you cant claim something generic like travel or insurance.

Blogger, gonna be millionaire

I personally have been Tweeting for a few months. But I
use the phrase “tweeting for a few months” loosely. I
haven’t been all that consistent with it, and I definitely
didn’t have a strategy. I just thought it was kind of cool.

Recently I’ve started paying more attention to it for a few
reasons; my mother-in-law was at a librarian conference
recently and attended a session on Twitter. I got into a
conversation with her about it, and then the next day I saw
John Reese’s email about Twitter. It seems like there is a
lot of twittering about Twitter going on. What is Twitter?

According to the Twitter FAQ, “Twitter is for staying in
touch and keeping up with friends no matter where you are
or what you’re doing.”

Wikipedia says, “Twitter is a free social networking and
micro-blogging service that allows users to send updates
via SMS, instant messaging, email, to the Twitter website,
or any one of the multitude of Twitter applications now
available”.

Basically Twitter asks the question, “What are you doing?”
and allows you to send a short update (your tweets are
limited to 140 characters) to your followers (family,
friends, colleagues, customers, potential customers etc).

Twitter allows you to send and receive updates (also called
tweets) via your browser, email, instant messaging clients
and SMS (using your cell phone). No matter where you are,
you can tweet!

I haven’t been following Twitter since day 1, so I’m not
going to comment on it’s evolution but I will speculate
that as its popularity grows, as more and more marketers
use it, 2 things are inevitable:

1. Rules on Twitter etiquette will continue to evolve as we
learn what we like and dislike about it, and as we respond
to the inevitable abuse of Twitter (don’t mean to sound
negative but it happens with each exciting new opportunity
- people end up abusing it).

2. More and more companies will jump on board and try to
get in on the conversation.

Start Twittering, (or is it Tweeting?)

Remember, when you first join Twitter, it can feel like a
lonely place. When you aren’t following anyone and no one
is following you, you may find yourself asking “what is the
point?” I’ve heard so many people say they just don’t get
it. In fact, I’ve said that myself.

The key is to find the Tweets you want to follow so you can
keep your finger on the pulse of your niche. The next key
is to start building your followers. More on that in a
minute.

How can Twitter help your business?

The more contact you have with a potential customer, the
more likely you are to get their business. You can stay
“top of mind” through Twitter. Let them know what’s new in
your industry, in your company etc. You become a source of
quick news flashes for them.

Here are just a few of the benefits of Twitter:

- It reminds people that you exist.

- It shows people you have something to say.

- It shows them that you are human.

- It allows you to mention new offers, sales and breaking
news immediately.

- It allows you to form a more casual relationship.

- You can use Twitter to promote your social bookmarking
submissions.

- You can ask for referrals, suggestions, feedback and
help, and people will respond.

Twitter is also fun and is contributing to the new language
we are constantly developing. For example “Twitterference”
- the intrusion of twitter updates on your phone making it
hard to have a conversation on your phone.

Finding Followers:

Start by reaching out to your friends, family, mailing list
etc. You can also add your Twitter link to your email
signature line; add links to your website and Blog. Mention
your Twitter account in your newsletter.

Twitter Rules

One cardinal rule (that is in your best interest to
follow): if you use Twitter as a pure sales tool, you will
lose followers quickly. As with all forms of social media,
it is about creating a conversation and sharing news – it’s
not all about you shoving your sales message down their
throats.

Tweets are limited to 140 characters. This is to allow them
to be easily sent over mobile SMS systems.

You aren’t able to embed HTML with the exception of
hyperlinks.  (But they are no-follow links, so they won’t
help you in your SEO quest for backlinks)

Bonus: Twitter automatically uses the TinyURL service to
shorten links.

Don’t tweet too much, or too little. There is no magic
number and it varies according to your audience. Some
people say don’t update more than once per hour. Others
say not more than once or twice a day. I tend to be in the
once or twice a day camp. If there is breaking news and
some days you just have to update more often then it’s OK.
If your tweets are valuable information, people will be more
tolerant of frequent updates.

On the other hand if you are too quiet, people have nothing
to follow so make sure you find that balance and tweet just
enough to keep people informed but not annoyed.

Don’t forget that your profile shows a history of all your
tweets, so if a new person comes along and sees that you
don’t have many tweets they may decide you aren’t worthy of
following. Also if your past tweets aren’t informative or
interesting, you lose some potential followers.

You’ll find that sometimes you get involved in personal
conversation with someone. Try to avoid doing too much of
this. Not everyone will be interested in your personal
communications. If you do need to do this, put the @
symbol in front of somebody’s name – this indicates that
this message is for them.

One thing to keep in mind about personal conversation
tweets – some people who are following you may not be
following the person you are talking to. This means they
get only one half of the conversation. One suggestion is
to word your tweet so that spectators have an idea of what
you are talking about. That way, they can feel more
included in the conversation.

Trust and Twitter

With so much hype in marketing, people are really looking
for a company that can trust. You can build trust with
prospects by allowing them to get to know you, and by
providing them with information. Twitter allows you to do
just that.

A great tip: look at your own Tweet history – is the
information valuable, does it build trust? Would you want
to follow yourself?

Get tweeting!

It may take some trial and error, and you probably want to
check out what others are tweeting about to get a feel for
the style. But don’t spend too long lurking – check it out
and then jump on in.
